Operations or Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard:
Functional Skills: Functional Skills in English and Maths
On programme duration: Minimum of 24 Months
Who is it for? Middle Manager, Operations Manager, Regional Manager, Divisional Manager, Store Manager, Head of Department and a variety of specialist managers.
An Operations or Departmental Manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, and achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives, as part of the delivery of the organisations strategy. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities and job titles will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same.
Key responsibilities are likely to include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.
On Programme Training Training and development takes place during this part of the apprenticeship which may include a qualification if it is identified as a requirement in the standard. Formative assessment of skills, knowledge and behaviours is required in the delivery of the standard and this will be outlined in the assessment plan.
- Assessment Plan A plan of the apprenticeship on-programme period of learning, development and continuous assessment, managed by the employer and training provider.
- Functional Skills Level 2 Will be delivered if required, this will include English and Maths.
- End Point Assessment preparation ETS will provide the mock assessment materials, support and guidance, we empower apprentices to structure learning towards the end point assessment format to assure the best chance of success.
Gateway The employer and provider are required to sign-off the apprentice as ready to move on to end-point assessment.
To move on to end-point assessment, the apprentice must show evidence of the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in the standard and have achieved maths and English at Level 2
End Point Assessment The end-point assessment must demonstrate that the apprentice can perform in the occupation in a fully competent, holistic and productive way..
The assessment plan has four modes of assessment:
- Knowledge Test using scenarios and questions A series of different scenarios and situations will be used, with a series of questions requiring responses which will demonstrate the apprentices knowledge of that particular topic. The knowledge test may be delivered online or be paper-based, and is likely to be multiple choice.
- Structured competency based interview The knowledge requirements within the Standard will be tested using a structured series of questions to assess the apprentice’s knowledge to ensure all aspects are given coverage. The interview can be conducted using a range of media (telephone interview, live media, online or written), whichever is the most appropriate for the apprentice.
- Assessment of portfolio of evidence The completed portfolio will be assessed by the Independent Assessor who makes their own judgement on the quality of the work. It will comprise a collection of evidence (preferably in an online portfolio with written, audio and video evidence) which might include: Written statements, Presentations, Performance reviews between employer and apprentice, Observations (recorded by the training provider), Reports, Ongoing professional discussions between apprentice and training provider relating to projects and assignments (recorded by the training provider).
- Assessment of and presentation on work-based project Given to a panel comprised of the independent assessor, training provider and employer, the apprentice’s 15 minute presentation describes the objectives and output of their work-based project and should demonstrate: what the apprentice set out to achieve, what they produced, how they approached the work and dealt with issues, and appropriate interpersonal and behavioural skills. This is followed by a 15 minute Q&A session with the panel, during which the apprentice’s broader experiences are explored to confirm that the knowledge and skills defined in the standard have been met.
- Professional discussion relating to CPD activity In this concluding assessment module, the end point assessor leads a discussion to uncover additional evidence of personal development activities and how this learning was applied to the role and workplace.
ETS will support you in the selection and allocation of a single independent assessor to see each apprentice through all modes of assessment and assure consistent quality.
Certification On successful completion, the end-point assessment organisation will apply for the apprenticeship certification. The certificate will then be sent to the apprentice’s employer.
Progression Once the Level 5 Operations or Departmental Manager Apprenticeship is complete, the learning doesn’t have to stop. ETS offers a full suite of programmes designed to take your apprentice onwards and upwards. Their next step could be Chartered Manager and Leadership and Management status.
